Room 1

Term 3 2010

Welcome to the Room 1 page!

Kia Ora, my name is Miss McLachlan and I am the teacher of the fantastic Room One.  We currently have 27 superb students in our class.

This term we are starting off with our In At the Deep End water safety programme that will run for the first four weeks of the term.  Students will go to West Wave on Fridays to take part in the practical sessions at the pool.  They will learn key strategies such as putting on a life jacket in and out of the water, safe water entry, the buddy system, H.E.L.P and HUDDLE to prepare them with effective survival techniques.  Students need to bring their togs and a towel on Fridays.  No boxer shorts to be worn while swimming.  Board shorts and a tshirt may be worn over togs.

The speech competition is in week five of this term.  Each student will research and prepare a speech on a chosen topic for presentation to the class.  The top students will then be entered into our school competition and the winners will then go on to the zone speech competition.

In maths we have been moved on to Geometry.  Totara is cross grouping for mathematics again which means that students are divided up among the three classes so that teaching can be targeted at a particular level so that all students in each class are working with others of similar ability.

Students have been working in small groups focussing on specific needs in reading such as building vocabulary, inferencing, identifying main ideas, identifying author's purpose, and finding information.  Our reading programme will be based largely around NZ water disasters and water safety to link with our topic.

Totara goes to Bruce McLaren each Tuesday morning for Tech which the kids really enjoy.  Please make sure that correct footwear (covered toe, not canvas) is worn on Tuesdays!

Thursday afternoons is Team Sports so make sure a change of clothes is brought along to school as the field is rather muddy!

Room 1 is a fantastic class to work with!  There is no blame in our class.  We take responsibility for our actions and support each other in our learning.  In our class it is ok to make mistakes because everyone does!  We have heaps of fun and laugh a lot while doing some really great learning!
