Room 9
This term our major focus will be “What’s My Job?” This will involve looking at different jobs in our community. We will also be focusing on social skills and values. This includes being able to work independently, manners, respect and more. We will be looking at gaining a better understanding of these.
Room 9 and Room 11 will continue taking part in Trees for Survival this term. In June we will be visiting a local farm and planting the trees we have been growing. Every Thursday (unless it is raining) is our planting day. This term we are planting seedlings into trainers to get them ready to plant in the community.
Spelling words and sight words will continue this term. To assist them with learning these, encourage them to write them out, put them into sentences or put them into alphabetical order.
In Maths this term we will be continuing to work on Addition and Subtraction, as well as time, money and geometry. Improving number knowledge is a big focus. Some activities you can do at home are asking them to:
* count to 100
* count backwards from any number to 100
* say the number that comes before or after any number to 100
* basic facts to 10 e.g 3+3=, 6+4=, 3+2=
Some other things you can do to help their maths is, at home [or in the car] ask your child to skip count in 2’s, 5’s and 10’s. This means they say: 2,4,6,8,10 etc. This is the beginning of learning times tables. If these are easy extend the skip counting to counting in 3’s, 4’s, 6’s, 7’s, 8’s and 9’s.
Reading letterbox numbers is also a good way to reinforce the number knowledge they are learning at school. As you go for a walk down the road ask your child to read the numbers on letterboxes. Ask what will the next letterbox be?
Reading and following cooking recipes is another excellent way to help your child read and apply maths knowledge in a fun and enjoyable way.
Many thanks - Shannon KIngston
