Room 9
RUGBY WORLD CUP
Our topic this term involves us learning about the rugby world cup and the countries that are participating. Some questions we will be disussing are: What is the Rugby World Cup? Why do they have it? What countries are taking part in it? Where are they from? What is rugby and how is it played?
We are looking forward to supporting the All Blacks.
Spelling homework will be sent home weekly.
Reading books will be sent home in your child’s book bag along with a reading log.
Maths homework is send home daily. This is to help improve their basic knowledge and support what they are learning in the classroom.
Trees for Survival Project
This involves growing and planting native trees. Our visit to the local farm is taking place this term.
In Maths this term we will be working on number knowledge. Some activities you can do at home are helping your child to:
* count to 100
* count backwards from any number to 100
* say the number that comes before or after any number to 100
* basic facts to 10 e.g 3+3=, 6+4=, 3+2=
* counting out money and finding out the correct change
Some other things you can do to help their maths is, at home [or in the car] ask your child to skip count in 2’s, 5’s and 10’s. This means they say: 2,4,6,8,10 etc. This is the beginning of learning times tables. If these are easy extend the skip counting to counting in 3’s, 4’s, 6’s, 7’s, 8’s and 9’s.
Reading letterbox numbers is also a good way to reinforce the number knowledge they are learning at school. As you go for a walk down the road ask your child to read the numbers on letterboxes. Ask what will the next letterbox be?
Reading and following cooking recipes is another excellent way to help your child read and apply maths knowledge in a fun and enjoyable wa.
Reading stories to and with your child is an excellent way to help your child read and gives them ideas about stories that they could write themselves. Some ways to assist your child in writing are asking them to writing letters, shopping list, cards, and recounts of something you have experienced together. Once they have written this by hand, they could be encouraged to type it up onto the computer. This is a great way to encourage them in their writing.
Many thanks - Shannon KIngston
