Room 14
Dear Parents and Caregivers of Room 14 children,
Welcome to Term 3 and I hope you all had a relaxing midyear break. Being the winter term, we often get a lot of wet weather. If possible, please send along some wet day activities, i.e. puzzles, colouring in books, activity books, etc your child can do on those days we cannot get outside.
Also this is the term when the ground is very wet and children do get covered in mud, particularly if they slip over. Please ensure your child has a change of pants in their bag as this makes dealing with accidents a lot easier.
Last term our topic was Minibeasts, and wow, did we have a great time learning about the insects and creepy crawlies in our neighbourhood! It was definitely a popular topic with the children and inspired lots of independent research. Our trip to the Auckland War Memorial Museum was also fantastic and our tour through Weird and Wonderful was a great way to follow up our learning.
Term 3 is going to be very busy! Our topic this term is Countries of the World, and we are already excited about learning some interesting facts about countries around the world. Our big question is “How do people’s lives in other countries differ from our lives in New Zealand?” We will investigate languages, customs, geographical features, arts, foods and games!
In Maths, we will focus on Addition and Subtraction and basic Measurement and Fractions for our Year 3 students and will be focusing on Measurement, Fractions, Decimals and Percentages for our Year 4 students, as well as regular practice of our Multiplication and Division facts. While we will get lots of practice at school, it is important to remember to keep practicing the basic multiplication facts with your child at home, as this gives your child a huge advantage in their learning.
Our Reading programme will focus on each child’s specific needs. Reading mileage is critical for your child to become a reader, so please try to keep up the home reading. Each day, every child will be expected to choose a new book from their “pick box” to read at home. (If your child is an independent reader, they may choose to read one of their own books). Please remember to keep updating your child’s reading log in their homework books.
In Writing, children will be focused on narrative writing, diary writing and poetry. We will be writing on a variety of topics and we will continue to practice the surface features of spelling, correct grammar, handwriting and editing skills.
Our Library day is Thursday so try to make sure library books come back in time! Our ICT day is Monday and Sport is also on a Thursday.
Nikau Fitness will continue this term. Please make sure that your child is dressed appropriately for fitness and that if possible, they have suitable footwear. Fitness is from 9 - 9.15 every morning, except Thursday where we all go to the hall and have music, so it is important to have your child to arrive at school early enough to get settled and ready for our 9:00 start.
School uniform must always be worn and if there are any issues in this regard, please let me know.
Homework has started again and will be coming home on a Monday and is to be returned on a Friday. Please note that if homework isn’t returned, then it will not get marked. A separate notice will go home shortly explaining Homework for the term.
Dates to remember:
Week 1 - School Reports are out;
Week 2- Parent Interviews and Maori Language Week;
Week 3 - Swanson School Open Evening.
Please don’t hesitate to contact me should you have any questions or issues to discuss. Many thanks for your continued support.
Yours sincerely,
Fiésole Marks
***In Term 1, Room 14's topic was Our Ecological Footprint. We decided that one of the ways we could reduce our ecological footprint was by reusing old materials. Here are some pictures of Room 14 using recycled materials to create new products! It was a lot of fun!***
***In Term 2, our topic was MINI-BEASTS! We went on an awesome trip to the Auckland Memorial Museum and had a lot of fun in Weird and Wonderful learning about bugs, and exploring the rest of the Museum too! Miss Marks took some photos of us while we were there.......***
