Mathamaticians Abound
We are fortunate at Swanson School to have on our staff, Mrs Thomson who is an extremely talented Mathematics specialist teacher. During Term One, Mrs Thomson delivered a series of lessons for students that show aptitude in Mathematics.Over fifty students ranging from year 1 to year 8 were involved in the programme, taking part in lessons tailored to the varying age levels. The main focus of the programme was on practical problem solving tasks and exploring how to find solutions in a methodical and logical manner. The students were given the opportunity to work in groups, in pairs and as individuals. Mrs Thomson commented that the students were very engaged and she felt that they enjoyed working with and sharing their talent for mathematics with others that shared the same passion.
Writing for Gifted and Talented
The Writing for Gifted and Talented programme ran through term One. The programme was facilitated by Mrs Annette Duxfield, who is currently completing a Masters Degree in literacy learning. The programme involved... students from year 3 to year 8. The goal of the programme was to enter the Scholastic Books Short Story Competition. The students reviewed what features make a good story and critiqued the work of several New Zealand authors. For the purposes of the competition, the students were encouraged to draw on personal experiences, possibly life in Swanson. The winners of the competition are currently being decided.
